Universities and colleges have long been engaged in deployment and application of information technologies. Now leading-edge institutions are challenged to develop inter-linked systems of advanced computing power, storage, graphic display capabilities, networks, research instrumentation and sensors, and related software, support structures and virtual organizations to support collaborative research and instruction. A recent NSF report labeled this constellation of campus, regional, national, and international resources "Cyberinfrastructure (CI)."
As part of their CI initiatives, several institutions have organized "CI Days," in which key community members were assembled to explore how their education and research endeavors could be enhanced by CI, the prospects offered by new technologies, as well as CI developments on other campuses. CI Days participants typically include representatives of key stakeholder groups -- faculty, research staff, research and academic administrators, librarians and IT staff, and students. CI Days have been one-to three-day events, often including an evening social. A group of higher education associations, "the CI Days Consortium," has lent support to several of these events and has recently received a grant from the National Science Foundation to provide financial and other support to seven research universities interested in organizing CI Days.
